Retired nurses from Groothoek Psychiatric Hospital, still have the passion to build a home for the persons with mental issues and making a difference to the society. On Thursday, 29th September 2022, Groothoek Psychiatric Group held their 2nd gathering to gear the vision at the Warmbaths Forever Resort in Bela-bela, Limpopo.

The Co-founder and Spokesperson of the GPG, Mr Marathaganye Elias Diketane (63) says, the organization is meant to revive the spirit of working with purpose and unity to the current workers at Psych section/ward and the retired workers for all occupation.

The organization started on the 07th of May 2022, with the aim to recollect the former stuff of Groothoek Hospital before it moved to Thabamopo Hospital. “There is no rest for the passionate retired persons. This will bring back the Ubuntu as one of the major moral as Africans.” Said Diketane.

Beatrice Tjikana, Deputy Chairperson, and former nurse says, in the long run they intend to build a halfway house to gather the patients living with mental problems and at least try to maintain their health, diminishing defaults, shame and unforeseen circumstances, hoping for the government’s intervention.

Isaac Kekae (59) manager for HIV and STI at the Johannesburg Municipality said, “this organization will assist with the revival of the relationship between the workers of the Psych ward regardless of position, and to make sure they inherit it to the current generation.”
