Former Head of the Special Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU) in the North West, Adv. Jeanette Nevelling was arrested on 16 February 2021, on an allegation of shoplifting at a retail shop at The Crossing Shopping Mall in Mmabatho. She allegedly stole clothing and food items valued at approximately R3000.

National Prosecuting Authority Regional spokesperson Henry Mamothame says the trial was scheduled to start on Wednesday, 06 April 2022, however her legal representative requested a postponement owing to her(legal representative) Ill-health. The postponement was also granted on their request, to afford them time to source cellphone records that they intend to use in their defence.

Mamothame says her R500 bail was extended until the next court appearance and the state is ready to proceed with the trial and has long provided the defence attorney with the charge sheet as well as the video footage contained as evidence.

Meanwhile, Adv. Mashudu Mudau from the Limpopo Division of the NPA will represent the state, to ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, as Adv. Nevelling was a senior official within the North West Division. She has since resigned and effectively ceased being an NPA employee as of 30 October 2021.

The Molopo Magistrates` Court postponed the theft case against the former Head of SCCU to 13 June 2022.
