SA U20 Athlete is world champion
2 min readUdeme Okon was a superb during the World U20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru where he finished on a first spot.
Udeme has won a gold medal in the 400m while recording a time of 45.69 seconds, which is his second-fastest time of the year. He went on to win silver medal in the 4×400m relay, returning home with two medals.
Udeme Okon took his time to appreciate the people who have been there for him through out the competition.
He said “I’m honoured and blessed to have represented South Africa in the World U20 Champs. The feeling is surreal, and I’m grateful for everybody that has supported me through this journey; family, friends and teacher. “
Okon started his career with a short-race at Florida Park High School as a 100m and 200m sprinter.
Then the young athlete was helped by his trainer coach Lyle Wentzel to switch from the two track into new track(400m).
The trainer emphasized that the young star Okon executed the plan well through out the competition.
Lyle said “We knew that if we stuck to our race plan and model, we would make it through the rounds and progress into the finals. In the final, our strategy was going to be the same just to produce faster times. The competition was tough; however, we executed better on the day.”
Lyle went on to highlight that his athlete have a bright future and they just hand everything in the hands of the above(God).
He said “The future is looking bright and promising. We leave everything in God’s hands, and we will have a successful future going forward.”
