The Blues Coach blame Premier League rules after the departure of star player
2 min readChelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca blames Premier League rules as the reason why Blues are selling so many academy players in recent years, with Conor Gallagher being one of players sold.
The coach believes that it is not a specific problem the Blues suffers but rather a wider issue. Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR) has seen clubs in recent seasons work hard to remain within the financial plan laid out.
In June, numerous clubs choose to sell their academies players ahead of an annual accounting dealine for PSR. The Blues lost Ian Maatsen, while Aston Villa lost Omari Kellyman who joined the opposite direction and the likes of Everton who sold players like Lewis Dobbin.
Academy players are sold based on profit, allowing teams to balance their books. On the other hand Chelsea have sold their well established players drastically since the arrival of Clearlake Capital.
Conor Gallagher’s departure to Atletico Madrid is set to be the fresh move. Lewis Hall, Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all been sold in past seasons.
After concluding their pre-season tour that was held in United States the head coach of Chelsea defended his team for selling the young-stars.
Maresca said “But this is not Chelsea’s problem, These are the rules. All the clubs at this moment are compelled to sell players from the academy because of the rules. It’s all of the Premier League clubs’ problems.
“I also think the intention of the club is not to sell players from the academy, but it is the rules at the end that you have to do it.
“It’s not only us; it’s all the Premier League clubs. It’s a shame because in Italy we have Francesco Totti at Roma, 20 years with the same club.
“A one-club man — we love that in football; the fans want to see that. But with the rules now, it is different from the past.”
