GENERAL MASEMOLA APPOINTED AS A NEW NATIONAL POLICE COMMISSIONER

Police Minister Bheki Cele has welcomed the appointment of Lieutenant General Sehlahle Fannie Masemola as the country’s new National Commissioner.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the appointment of one of the experienced members of the police services into the top police position Thursday, 31 March 2022. Cele said the ministry was hopeful that the appointment, which marks a new chapter in the life of the SAPS would further strengthen the existing efforts within the police services to safeguard South Africans and all those who live within country’s boarders along with their property.

Masemola served as the Deputy National Commissioner responsible for policing since April 2016. Speaking at his first media briefing on Friday 01 April 2022, he listed safety and security issues he intended to focus on and amongst them it includes the safety of police officers and the ongoing attacks on them, DNA backlogs in the forensic science laboratories.

The ministry revealed that Masemola was no stranger to the functioning of the police both at an administrative and operational level, again it received the announcement of the appointment of Masemola with much enthusiasm and optimism.

The newly appointed Commissioner began leading the men and women on Friday 01 April 2022
