The Limpopo Department of Social Development has described statement which was released by the Democratic Alliance on the Seshego Treatment Centre as misleading and lacking substance on Monday,27 June 2022.

Social Development spokesperson Witness Tiva says DA is deliberately creating an impression that the department has not been doing any work in helping people who are having challenges in the abuse of substances. It also went on to allege that the department underspent its budget for running the Seshego Treatment Centre.

He says the treatment of substance abuse is not only limited to the admission at the Seshego Treatment Centre. The Department is rendering its services through two rehabilitation treatment options, namely outpatient and inpatient. Inpatient rehabilitation is typically more intensive and designed to treat individuals with more severe addiction. Outpatient treatment is on a part-time basis and for individuals with milder forms of addiction.

DA spokesperson Katlego Phala says the department underspent its budget of R68,457 million with R2,595 million.

She furthermore says the department has spent the last quarter of the previous financial year without a doctor who deals with admissions, but the department said it is in the process of appointing a private doctor who will offer services, but admissions is currently dependent on those hospitals that can detoxify users.
