University of Limpopo students and the landlords from the resident of Turfloop, embarked on a strike over NSFAS off-campus allowances on Wednesday, 14th September 2022.

It is alleged that the riot was influenced by the delay of the failure to respond to the submitted memorandum, after landlords and students held a meeting on Monday morning at zone 1 park in Mankweng, in finding solutions for the allowances.

During the riot, students from the on-campus residents were dragged out from their accommodation rooms and assaulted by the security personnel and some students where arrested during the commotion.

The Spokesperson of University of Limpopo Professor Kwena Masha says, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has requested for lease agreements between landlords and students living off-campus to allow the off-campus release, however, he denies the response to why the food allowance which should be included to the funds has yet been released for the year.

The strike continues and students who live in the premises of the University, are asked to vacated the institution, and academic activities are currently at pause.
