SCRAPYARD OWNERS ARRESTED FOR CABLE THEFT

City Power welcomed the arrest of two scrapyard owners in Roodepoort for being in possession of stolen cables. The two are part of the six(6) suspects who were arrested on Friday, 08 July 2022 in separate incidents by City Power security and the SAPS’s Essential Infrastructure Task Team.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says technical experts were called to the scene where they possitively identified the infrastructure that included copper cables and busbars often stolen from vandalised mini substations worth a quarter of a million rands.

In another incident, four suspects were arrested in Alexandra township for the theft of ABC cables. The suspects were cornered by the community and police found City Power cables used on the streetlights.
The suspects were booked and charged at Alexandra SAPS.

He says five incidents of theft and vandalism recorded overnight on Thursday, 07 July 2022. This includes the theft of a new Minisubstation worth about R600 000 in Midrand. The minisubstation was installed on Monday,04 July 2022 in Klipfonteinview to help alleviate outages caused by overloading when it was stolen that night.

A case has been opened with Rabie Ridge police and several leads are being followed in this regard.
