NUMSA TO EMBARK ON STRIKE AT FORD SA FROM THURSDAY OVER BOUNS DEMANDS.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has threatened to down tools at Ford South Africa over a dispute concerning bonuses. This could bring production at the vehicle-maker to a halt across the country on Thursday the 4th July 2024. NUMSA said that it served Ford South Africa with a 48 hours strike notice over employees bonuses and said that the commissioner issued the certificate to strike after picketing rules where concluded.

This comes after a failed wage negotiations at the CCMA offices in Pretoria, last month between the union and the automobile manufacturer . NUMSA will be representing over 3000 workers given that it is the only recognized union at Ford South Africa.

NUMSA’s spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said that the reason for the strike was that Ford was refusing to share its profits with workers as Ford management refuse to pay bonuses to its workers.

“Our members are the creators of wealth and Ford has benefitted hugely from the sweat and labour of workers. It [Ford management] pretends not to understand the demand and they keep claiming it is impermissible. We reject this with the contempt it deserves.”

“We are asking for a bonus. We are not specifying the amount at this time,” she said.

The union said Ford had “made a fortune” over the past four years globally, and could “definitely afford some kind of bonus”. said secretary-general Irvin Jim in a statement issued by Numsa
